Breast Augmentation Surgery
Prior to scheduling a breast augmentation procedure, patients will have consultations with Dr. Greenberg to discuss their goals and determine a customized surgical plan based on the type of implant, size, placement and a number of other factors. Once the details are decided, the surgery can be scheduled. At this point, patients are provided with preoperative instructions to follow. It is important to adhere to all instructions to help ensure a successful result. Any questions or concerns can be addressed at this time in order to ensure the patient has a thorough understanding of the upcoming procedure and feels comfortable with proceeding with the surgery.
The breast augmentation procedure will be performed in the state-of-the-art, fully accredited surgical center in our office. The entire procedure is typically completed in one to two hours. The patient is provided general anesthesia just before the surgery begins. Once the anesthesia has completely taken effect, the surgeon will make an incision in the area of the body that was predetermined to be best suited to that particular patient’s needs. The incision is made in the most inconspicuous place under the breast, in the armpit, around the nipple or in the navel to reduce the chance of a visible scar forming.
Placing the Breast Implant
Once the incision has been made, the surgeon can insert the selected implant into a pocket created within the tissue of the breast. This will be placed either above or below the pectoral muscle of the chest, depending on what the doctor has established to be the optimal location for the implant. If a silicone implant is being used, it will be inserted prefilled at the determined size. If a saline implant is being used, it will be inserted empty and filled to the designated size once it is in place. The implant is then correctly positioned and secured within the pocket of breast tissue.
To complete the breast augmentation procedure, the surgeon will suture the incision closed. Sometimes, additional skin adhesives or surgical tape are applied as well, to ensure the skin remains firmly in place and heals properly.
Breast Augmentation Recovery Process
Following the breast augmentation procedure, patients are monitored in an ultra-modern, technologically equipped recovery room for several hours. They rest comfortably while the medical team makes sure they are recovering nicely and experiencing no complications. Later that day, the patient is discharged and sent home with instructions to follow for post-surgical care.
Patients are advised to relax for the remainder of that day and the next morning until returning to the surgeon’s office for a follow-up appointment. At that point, the doctor will examine how the patient is healing and make recommendations as to when she can return to work and other normal daily activities. If a 24-hour rapid recovery mini-incision process was used, the patient will likely be cleared to resume all activities immediately, with the exception of strenuous exercise.
Patients may notice some degree of discoloration, soreness or swelling following the breast augmentation procedure. This is a common occurrence and it generally resolves quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be safely taken to relieve soreness. All signs of discoloration and swelling should be gone within a few weeks of the surgery.
Breast Augmentation Results
The results of a breast augmentation procedure are apparent immediately and will last for many years. Most women are very happy with the size, shape and overall look of their breasts after the surgery and may feel a greater sense of self-esteem. In addition to being larger, the breasts may now appear more symmetrical, fuller and more youthful in their appearance.
