The Differences Between Saline And Silicone Breast Implants
When considering breast implants, it's important to become familiar with the type of implants available to best determine which are right for that specific person's needs. Both saline and silicone breast implants are common choices among women, and each offer their own benefits. By learning more about each type, a patient can move forward with the implants, confident that she has made the best choice for her needs.
Saline Vs. Silicone
Both saline and silicone breast implants contain silicone, as silicone makes up the outer shell of the breast implant. Yet, the material inside of the silicone shell differs in material, creating a different consistency. Some women find one type superior to the other, while others find both to be just as effective.
Inside of the silicone shell, saline breast implants are filled with salt water. Initially, the implants are installed as just the silicone shells, but once they are in place, they're filled with salt water solution. They're used for both implants and beast reconstruction in women over the age of 18.
While saline implants are filled with the solution, silicone implants are pre-filled with a gel made from silicone. The silicone gel is unique in consistency, created to mimic the feel of human fat, creating a natural feel for the implants. Women of any age are eligible to use them for reconstruction, while women aged 22 and over are eligible for breast reconstruction.
While it was previously believed that silicone implants were high risk, they actually both have the same level of risks. The most common risks present after implants with either silicone or saline include the following: risk of scar tissue developing, pain in the breast, moderate to severe infection, and repute which leads to leaking. With the right preventative measures, along with great medical care, these issues can be prevented and the implants heal without problems.
