Revision Breast Augmentation Techniques

There are a number of reasons a patient may choose to undergo revision breast augmentation. At the practice of Long Island plastic surgeon Stephen T. Greenberg, the most common reason a patient is unhappy with the results of her breast augmentation is implant size. While the majority of women who undergo breast augmentation achieve their desired results, some patients are left feeling dissatisfied with the size, shape, or appearance of their breasts after undergoing the procedure. Some of the reasons a woman may be unhappy with the results of her breast augmentation include unrealistic expectations, natural changes in the body, age of the implant, no longer desiring to have breast implants, and complications after surgery such as implant rupture and capsular contracture. For patients of Dr. Greenberg’s cosmetic surgery practice in Long Island, breast implant revision may be performed to address these and other issues and to help them achieve the feminine contours they desire.

Candidates for Revision Breast Augmentation

The most important reason Dr. Greenberg performs revision breast augmentation surgery is to ensure the happiness of patients with the results of their breast augmentation. The only way to correct undesirable breast augmentation results is through revision breast augmentation surgery. If you are unhappy with the size, feel, or shape of your breasts after undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you may benefit from the breast implant revision procedure. Ideally, candidates for revision breast augmentation are in good health, have realistic expectations of the procedure, and are dissatisfied with the outcome of a previous breast augmentation surgery.

Implant Exchange

The most common revision breast augmentation technique that is performed is implant exchange. This technique is very similar to the initial breast augmentation surgery and is performed on an outpatient basis. During the surgery, the current breast implant is removed and replaced with a new implant. Whenever possible, the new implant will be placed through the same incisions used to perform the initial breast augmentation surgery. Long Island breast augmentation patients dissatisfied with the size or feel of their current breast implants often benefit the most from this technique.

Pocket Change

This revision breast augmentation technique involves relocating the pocket in which the breast implant is contained. Typically, this involves moving the breast implant from above the chest muscle to below it. Pocket change, or revision of the pocket, may also be performed when the pocket holding the breast implant has become too large to hold the new breast implant. The pocket may be tightened to ensure that the new implant is held in an optimal position. By changing the position of the pocket, we can often give the breasts a more natural feel and appearance.

Capsulectomy

In cases of capsular contracture, the complete removal of the capsule surrounding the breast implant may be necessary. Pocket change surgery may also be necessary. Many patients choose to replace their breast implants when undergoing capsulectomy.
